A deeply disturbing movie that stays with you long after watching it. Bong Joon-ho portrays the class divide both visually and narratively.
What stayed with me most is the rainstorm scene. The Park family treats the heavy rain as a cozy, scenic event that just ruined their camping trip. Meanwhile, the Kim family’s entire home is flooded with sewage, forcing them to sleep on the floor of a gymnasium.
Ever since watching this film, every time it rains, it reminds me of the people who are out there suffering under the exact same rain. It’s literal case where “a shower for some is a flood for others”.
I guess, it also changed my perspective on what sympathy and empathy really mean. You can sympathize with someone, but you can never truly empathize with them unless you’ve experienced something similar. We’re somewhat like the Parks, in our own little ways. We often think we know how and what someone is going through when we say “I know how you feel” or “I know what you’re going through”. But, in reality, we are often as blind as the Parks.
