I had known almost nothing about the movie when I watched it in 2024. The usual questions like “Are we living in a simulation?” and “Will we eventually create an AI capable of constructing a Matrix?” were naturally the first thoughts that came to mind.
However, the most important discussion in the film revolves around Cypher.
Cypher chooses to betray Morpheus and the crew of the Nebuchadnezzar in exchange for having his memory erased and being re-inserted into the Matrix as a wealthy, famous actor. Sitting in a restaurant eating a synthetic steak he knows isn’t real, he famously concludes: “Ignorance is bliss.”
Cypher: You know, I know this steak doesn’t exist. I know that when I put it in my mouth, the Matrix is telling my brain that it is juicy and delicious. After nine years, you know what I realize?

Cypher: Ignorance is bliss.
Whether what Cypher did is justifiable is a moral question (not whether it was right or wrong). The ‘real world’ offers nothing but unedible gooey food, while also being hunted by machines. Comfort aside, the ‘real world’ is also dangerous, there was a good chance that he would’ve anyway died in the ‘real world’. In his shoes, I probably wouldn’t make the decision to betray the entire human race, but I think I understand why he made that choice. We know that Morpheus must have lied to Cypher too when he was recruited, believing that Cypher was the “one”. He too was fed a lie so that he would be willing to take the red pill. So in a sense, Morpheus and the resistance movement also relies on lies to keep humanity fighting for a cause. In that view, Cypher too was betrayed, but the cost of that was not the extinction of mankind.
